Protruding Ears Can Be Fixed With Otoplasty
Most of the time the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. By the age of 4, a child’s ears are usually fully grown and the earlier this procedure is done, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure from other kids. Otoplasty can also be performed on an adult with little to no additional risks.
The Procedure
Ear surgery usually takes about two to three hours, although depending on the complicity of the patients situation can take a little longer. The specific technique will depend on the problem. Your plastic surgeon will be able to discuss this procedure in greater depth and design a plan that will give you the results you would like.
With one of the more common techniques, the surgeon makes a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He or she will then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. Occasionally, the surgeon will remove a larger piece of cartilage to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete.
